Study in Australia requirements

Before you leave for Queensland, you will need to meet all the essential requirements for overseas students studying in Australia. Do your research on each education provider to know exactly what you need to do.

English Language Tests

Most international students will need to demonstrate their English proficiency (i.e. reading, writing and speaking) as part of their application process. Commonly accepted tests include IELTS, TOEFL and PTE Academic. All education providers set their own required scores, which depend on the course and level of study. Make sure you check the specific English language test requirements of your chosen institution and ensure you achieve the necessary scores well in advance of the application deadline.

General academic requirements

Academic requirements differ depending on the level of study and the required knowledge for your selected course. For undergraduate courses, you generally need a to have completed the equivalent of the Queensland Certificate of Education in your home country, with specific subject prerequisites for certain courses. Postgraduate programs typically require prior learning like a relevant bachelor’s degree, and some might also need you to have additional professional experience.

Always check the entry requirements provided by your preferred institution so you will meet all criteria. If you’re unsure, there will be pre-assessment services available to guide prospective students.  If you do not meet the academic requirements, check to see if there are pathway program options provided by your chosen provider.

Student visa

To study in Australia, you must get a student visa (subclass 500). This visa allows you to stay in Australia for the duration of your study program. You'll need to provide a confirmation of enrolment (CoE) from your educational institution, meet English language requirements and show proof of sufficient funds. For detailed information on student visa requirements and how to apply, refer to our Guide to Visas page.

Overseas student health cover

All international students are required to have overseas student health cover (OSHC) for the length of their stay in Australia. OSHC helps manage medical and hospital costs and you must take it out before arriving in Australia – for more information, visit our Overseas Student Health Cover page.

What can I bring to Australia?

Australia has strict biosecurity laws to protect its precious flora and fauna. When packing, you’ll need to comply with customs regulations to avoid fines or confiscation. Items like fresh food, seeds, plants, animal products and some medications are restricted.

Pack all your essential documents, clothing suitable for Queensland’s sunny and warm climate, as well as any personal items that will help you settle in. It's a good idea to carry a list of your packed items and declare anything that might be restricted upon arrival.

Banking and money

Australia’s currency is the Australian dollar (AUD). International students will need to set up a bank account in Australia to help manage your day-to-day finances. Most banks have student accounts with no or low fees. You can open an account online before you arrive or visit a branch once you’re in Queensland.

Having an Australian bank account will make it so much easier to pay bills, receive money from home and manage daily expenses. Remember to bring your passport, student ID and proof of enrolment when opening an account.
