Whether you’re looking for work while studying, or for employment in your field post-graduation, we’re here to help.
Queensland’s diverse range of work opportunities makes it an ideal place to launch your global career. A focus on high-quality education and training experiences for international students, alongside practical, on-the-ground experience means that you’ll graduate with more than just a certificate.
Understand how you can build your career during your studies and post-graduation.
During your studies
Studying in Queensland is a career-defining experience. Make the most of your time here by taking part in activities that better prepare you for work and help you stand out when applying for jobs. This includes:
Volunteering
Volunteering is a great way to get real-world skills and give back to the community. It also looks good on your resume and can create valuable networking opportunities.
Work experience
Taking part in work experience can help students transition from school to work by completing paid or voluntary activities at workplaces. It's a practical way to apply your classroom learning in real-world settings and work integrated learning opportunities are embedded in many Queensland university degree programs.
Working while studying
This is a good way to earn money and meet new people. You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight (two-week period) during the academic term and unlimited hours during semester breaks.
Post-graduation
Most international students return to their home countries once they complete their studies in Queensland. You will join a global alumni network of Queensland professionals that spans the globe, a network that thousands of students use to find job opportunities in their chosen fields.
If you want to build your career in Australia after you graduate, the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) allows international students to live, study and work in Australia temporarily after you have completed your studies.
Study Clusters
In Queensland, there are five regional Study Clusters dedicated to supporting international students:
Study Queensland provides funding to each of these Study Clusters through the Study Queensland Regional Funding Framework (SQRFF) grant program and works collaboratively with them to support an enhanced student experience.
Each of the Study Clusters offer employability courses and programs to help students understand and be prepared to compete in the Queensland job market. Additionally, dedicated student hubs in Cairns and the Gold Coast provide spaces for students to connect, learn and meet new people.
Working in Queensland (WiQ) modules
Study Queensland offers free, online Working in Queensland modules.
The learning courses provide students with a simulated environment to explore real-world work scenarios. This includes for Queensland businesses across the Advanced Manufacturing, Biomedicine, Sustainable Energy, and Tourism and Events industries.
Students can explore a diverse range of careers available in each industry and test out their skills.
