Alumnus Success: Michael, Korea

Michael Chung came to Queensland, Australia, to undertake a Bachelor of Business Management at The University of Queensland (UQ). Living between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Michael spent 10 years in Queensland before returning to Korea where he’s working for a global name in sport and fitness.
What are you doing now in your career?
I’m currently Director of Pure Players and Marketplace in Nike Korea, making digital business portfolios and digital partnerships.
Why did you decide to study Business Management, and what led you to Queensland, Australia?
I always had interests in business. But business skills and capabilities, in nature, cannot be improved only through books. UQ had great programs but I think Queensland is a great place because of its diversity.
Tell us more about your career up to this point …
I have worked in textiles and licensing industries prior to Nike, and I wanted to upscale my end-to-end knowledge through Retail and Brand experiences.
Did you work or undertake projects with employers or industry groups during your studies?
Yes, I started a joint venture in Hong Kong with Singapore and British medical companies. My idea materialised through my network of friends that I met in Queensland, Australia. A business idea is only good if it can be capitalised and bring stakeholders into the venture. That actualisation can be triggered through meeting the right people and that new network multiplies.
How has your experience in Queensland helped you with your career?
Queensland is a multi-cultural and national environment. Learning and expanding different perspectives, being flexible and networking are key to success.
What was the highlight of your experience living in Queensland?
I lived on the Gold Coast and Brisbane, enjoying the sun, beach, running tracks, clean environment, people, vibe, foods, sports and leisure. My whole 10 years of living there was perfect. I think of Queensland and Australia as my second home.
What career-advice would you give to give future students thinking about studying in Queensland?
Learn numbers, they are useful in real business life. Learn people and communication skills, it will open opportunities. Make friends and learn their culture and perspectives, it will create new ideas and bring the right support for it. Most of all, learn the right attitudes toward problems, and people, you will be loved.
What's the easiest way to develop a social-life in Queensland?
Play sports and enjoy leisure.
