Alumnus Success: Danny, Malaysia

Malaysian Danny Ler studied a Bachelor of Electrical and Aerospace Engineering (Hons) at The University of Queensland (UQ) from 2009-12.

What are you doing now in your career?

I’m currently managing Enterprise Risk in energy corporation Malakoff Corporation Berhad. Before my current role, I had been an engineer for many years.

Did you work or undertake work experience in Queensland?

I was a research assistant at NICTA and did a summer internship at CRCMining.

These experiences introduced and exposed me to the workplace. My colleagues were also really helpful and provided insightful advice and recommendations on how I should proceed in the future. On top of technical skills I utilised and learned on the job, I also learned soft skills which was useful during my career, and how to handle job interviews. 

What was the highlight of your experience living in Queensland?

I had an awesome experience interning at CRCMining, a world-leading research organisation focused on mining technology. I had a great mentor and colleagues and experienced working life in Australia. 

As part of my aerospace course (AERO1000 – Intro to Aviation Systems), I had the opportunity to experience flight in a Cessna, a small, piston-powered aircraft. 

I also loved being able to travel and hike around Australia and New Zealand.

How has your experience in Queensland helped you with your career?

It broadened my mind and allowed me to experience a different culture and environment. I have learned to appreciate other cultures and be open to change. This has shaped me as a person personally and professionally and helped me to build confidence and communication skills and allowing me to have friends from many nations. 

I increased my knowledge on climate change and sustainability in Queensland, writing a thesis on energy efficiency. This exposed me to the energy industry which is where I am now.

Studying in a top university improved my job prospects and I was offered a job before I graduated. 

Why did you decide to study in Queensland?

I have always loved solving problems and been interested in practical technology. Engineering was the logical career choice for me, being the practical application of science to solve problems and making the world function.

After completing my secondary education, I was offered a full scholarship to study in Australia. I received unconditional offers to study in various universities in Australia (University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, University of Western Australia) but I ultimately selected the University of Queensland because it received great reviews from parents of a friend that were alumni, its ranking, strength and diversity.

I was also enticed by the close proximity to Gold Coast and its famed beaches.

What career-advice would you give to give future students thinking about studying in Queensland?

Make the most of your time learning what the university can offer, participate in internship opportunities to learn about Australian workplace culture, connect with locals and students from around the world.

What's the easiest way to develop a social-life in Queensland?

The best way would be to identify your passion and join clubs offered around the university. It is always good to connect with existing students from your home country and ask them to introduce you around the place. Do not forget to always be willing to say ‘Hi’ first, to fellow classmates and anyone you may meet. People in Queensland are warm and hospitable.

I had a great time being involved in Australia Malaysia Business Council Queensland, getting a chance to meet industry leaders and local Queensland councillors. Through the council, I also participated in Dragonboat competitions which was a whole lot of fun.

Do you have any ongoing ties to Queensland?

I still have many friends living and working around Queensland and would love to visit them one day.
